Nothing is known about where Irvine was born, but it was around the time of the sorceress war. When he was four years old, both his parents died. He was sent to an orphanage, where he lived with several other children under the care of a kind matron. He was a quiet child and nowadays he says that he used to cry all the time, but his close friends at the orphanage (and one in particular) drew him out of his shell.
He was never adopted, but instead sent to Galbadia Garden as a young student. The Gardens were designed as a way to train young mercenaries, and as a student, Irvine learned how to be a sharpshooter. He was only a cadet during the events of the game, having never taken the SeeD exam in order to graduate.
The events of the game will not be relayed here, as there are summaries aplenty and the mun is trying to keep this fairly spoiler-free.
Irvine comes across as being fairly abrasive upon first glance, and says some things that "get a rise out of some people," but he only means half of what he says. He's laid-back but not quite confident, and has a heart of gold but no tolerance for pressure. He fancies himself a ladies' man, but more often than not says or does something mildly piggish that women find off-putting. But he puts his friends before all, and eventually became his team's moral and emotional center. He's a deep thinker, although he doesn't show it at first, and is willing to make sacrifices for the greater good.
When he arrived, he appeared in bed with Winry Rockbell, which earned a few tools pelted at him, but quickly made peace with her and reunited with his friend (and unrequited love) Selphie Tilmitt. Learning Selphie had a boyfriend did not make his day any better.
